Weiss Piezoelectric pistol.
Sort of a blend of fanciful pseudo-science and real-life weapons. The basic idea is a cheap n' dirty stamped-metal weapon that has been cut down for concealment and quick draw. High-density piezoelectric cartridge (ammunition) loads into the side, cassette-tape style. When the hammer strikes the firing pin, it drives into an opening in the cartridge, striking the piezoelectric lattice material within. This induces a large current, which is used to power a pulsed laser. The laser is powerful enough over short distances to create a small pocket of plasma at the impact site, the rapid expansion of which causes shock damage and temporary paralysis. More powerful versions of the same weapon type feature penetrating laser beams, which cause deeper and more destructive explosive plasma ablation.
This little gun is cheaply manufactured and easy to procure-- a favorite of small-time punks, and the bane of liquor store owners everywhere.
Anyway...I'm thinking of pursuing this one, further, but I'm meh for now.
